Kalibo — the capital town of the oldest province known as Aklan. In this town, Ati-atihan, dubbed as "The Mother of Philippine Festivals", is held, while an array of cultural products such as the well-known piña fiber weaving are found and loved.
But aside from these festivities, Kalibo has a lot to offer when it comes to scenery and tourist spots. So here are a few places that are worth visiting when you happen to be in Kalibo:
1. Bakhawan Eco Park and Research Centre
Bakhawan Eco Park was a mangrove reforestation project that started in 1990 and was renowned as one of the most successful reforestation projects in the Philippines. Today, this mangrove park is one of the most known tourist sites in Kalibo because of the scenery and various activities for the guests such as a 1.3 km walk on the bamboo trail or go kayaking on a bamboo raft. They even serve Tamilok or Woodworm, a local delicacy here in Aklan.
2. St. John the Baptist Cathedral

St. John the Baptist Cathedral is home to one of the shrines in Aklan, the Shrine of Sto. Niño, and mainly where the celebration of Ati-atihan takes place. This cathedral is located near the Plaza at the heart of Kalibo. It was originally constructed in 1804, but then moved from its original location in Barrio Laguinbanwa, Numancia. The building was reconstructed from 1993 to 1997.
3. Aklan Freedom Shrine

This tourist spot along D. Maagma and Veterans Avenue is a shrine dedicated to the 19 Martyrs of Aklan and every year on March 23, the people of Kalibo commemorate their death with various programs on that site. If you want to know a bit more about these heroes you can visit this shrine and learn who these 19 martyrs are. There are a lot of street food vendors and restaurants nearby if you want to grab a bite to eat.
4. Pastrana Park
Also known as the Plaza, this park is located at the centre of the town. Most of the major events in Kalibo are held here such as Ati-atihan contests or the big Christmas Tree lighting every December. You can stroll around the park and watch the children play on the playground or buy food from the local street food vendors.
5. Tigayon Hills
If you're up for a trek, then Tigayon Hills has got you covered. This hill is considered to be one of the highest geographical locations of the municipality and has been changed to make hikers have a more convenient way of going up the hill. At the very top of the hill you can find a chapel, where the view from above is ethereal.
6. Museo it Aklan
Museo it Akean is located near the plaza and has a display of paintings and artifacts that mix art and history. This museum is operated by the Archbishop Gabriel M. Reyes Memorial Foundation, Inc. and was built during 1882. The displays in the museum tell the story of the rich culture of Kalibo. They also hold various classes and tours in the building. If you're up to travel back in time and have a knack for history and art, this is a place for you.
